Atlético de Madrid unveils new stadium plans

7 December 2011 No Comment

Atlético de Madrid has revealed plans for a new 70,000-seat stadium that will replace its Vicente Calderon home.

The Calderon has been the home of the Liga club since 1966 and was renovated ahead of Spain’s staging of the 1982 FIFA World Cup. The stadium currently has a capacity of 55,000, but with a seven-year season ticket waiting list and the club feeling constrained by the relative lack of space available at the Calderon, Atlético has announced its intention to create a “unique and unmistakable icon for the club and city”.

The new stadium will be based on a site of 85,000 square metres, compared to the Calderon’s 30,000 square metres, and will also include its own metro station. Atlético de Madrid is determined that the venue will be developed to host more than club games, with the club envisioning the stadium as suitable for UEFA Champions League, World Cup and European Championship finals, as well as a major concert venue.

Madrid is bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games, and although the stadium will not boast a permanent athletics track it will include the flexibility to install one for special events.

Work is scheduled to be finished in time for the 2015-16 season and Atlético de Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo, said: “Today is an important day, I would say one of the most important days in the history of this club. There are not many times that you have the opportunity to live an important historic moment in the life of a sports club.”
