Gerrard set for Liverpool comeback
Steven Gerrard could make his first start this season for Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday when bitter rivals Manchester United arrive at Anfield.
The 31-year-old has been limited to three substitute appearances in all competitions so far because of a groin injury which kept him on the sidelines for six months. He underwent surgery because of the initial problem, and then suffered an infection to the area which kept him out for longer than expected. People who bet on football know how crucial he can be to Liverpool.
He came on a second-half replacement in the recent Merseyside derby but was left out of England’s squad for the 2-2 draw with Montenegro in Euro 2012 qualifying last Friday.
Now the Kop favourite is in line for a start against the champions after working hard on his fitness during the international break. Those following the Premier League betting will be keeping a close eye on him as he makes his comeback.
“A fit Steven Gerrard strengthens this football club, no question. If you have Steven in your squad, it’s going to raise the profile and standard,” said manager Kenny Dalglish.
“We want to have a really strong squad – and him being in it makes it that much stronger.”
Liverpool will be hoping to make it four wins on the bounce in the Premier League on home soil against their arch enemy from the other end of the East Lancs Road to continue their pursuit of Champions League football next season.
