DFL unveiled the brand new Bundesliga match ball for the 2011-2012 season, adidas Torfabrik football.

Cutting edge technology and elegant design combine perfectly in the official Bundesliga match ball for the 2011/12 season. The new ‘Torfabrik’ (English: ‘Goal Factory’) features a blue and red trim on a white background and has already been made available to every club in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga.

adidas, the official manufacturers of the ball, announced in a press conference along with the DFL on Monday that the new ball is “at the pinnacle of world design”.

Enough time to practise

DFL Member of the Executive Board for Marketing and Communications Tom Bender explained why the new ball had been presented two days after the 2010/11 season finale: “We wanted to give the clubs enough time to get used to the new ball, what with the 2. Bundesliga starting so early next year.” Each of the 36 professional clubs across Germany’s top two tiers will receive a set of new balls in due course.

Freshly-crowned champion Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund was impressed after firing his first shot with the new ball straight into the top corner: “That ball could be my lucky charm.”

Living up to its name

The technical development of the ball by manufacturers adidas was based upon the existing Champions League ball and addressed complaints of the previous version’s supposed unpredictable flight, according to the DFL.

Tom Bender was also pleased to announce solid sales figures since the introduction of a standardised ball across the top two divisions. The ‘Torfabrik’ has more than lived up to it’s name, with 894 goals scored in 306 matches so far – an average of 2.92 goals per game. Only 14 fixtures involving the ball have ended goalless.
