Rangers FC targets Indian fans with Hindi Twitter commentary
Rangers Football Club will attempt to capitalise on the arrival of two Indian players for a trial in the side, by targeting a potential new fan base in India via Twitter.
The club will offer Hindi Twitter commentary of the Scottish Premier League clash with St Johnstone today, ahead of the arrival of Sunil Chhetri and Jeje Lalpekhlua.
Football clubs using players as brand and marketing accessories is nothing new. But the Light Blues’ attempts at social marketing represent an interesting attempt to engage new fans.
The club recognises the value of new players for expanding any supporter base overseas, having seen an increase in global interest in the Ranger’s brand following the signing of Americans Carlos Bocanegra and Alejandro Bedoya.
Rangers chief operating officer Ali Russell explained: “We are attracting interest globally.
“A Rangers delegation will visit India later this month to meet key officials from the Indian Premier League.
“The club already has links to India thanks to the Rangers Charity Foundation’s partnership with UNICEF.
“There are undoubted opportunities for Rangers in the Asian market.”
Fans will be able to keep tabs on all the action by following @rfc_hindi on Twitter.
With a population of more than 1.2billion, India has the potential to be a massive money-spinner.
