Dutch soccer site Eredivisielive.nl launches new business model

11 July 2011 No Comment

The popular Dutch soccer websites and eredivisie.nl and eridievisielive.nl are merged into one. The site still consists of videos, news, statistics and live soccer matches. However, what is different is the online business model. Previously, it was focused on the advertising model, where revenues were generated through ads. Now the site is focused on paid content. The visitor pays for content such as a soccer game and, in return, he can watch it in good quality.

The past two years Eredivisie Live noticed that the business model of advertising revenues could not meet its expectations. However, the revenues out of paid content surpassed all expectations. Jan de Vries, responsible for the content and business development of Eredivisie Live says: “You see that the acceptance for paying for online content increases. You see that everywhere, provided that the quality is good.”

What are the differences with the advertising model? The paying customer no longer sees ads and gets access to on demand content, before the customer who does not pay.

Nowadays, we see that more and more companies use a business model with paid content, rather than a model with ads in order to generate income. Many newspapers for instance make use of a ‘paywall’. In that case, some items may only be (entirely) read in case the reader has paid for it.

It looks like online consumers are finding it worthwhile to pay for something with a certain news value, such as a newspaper article or a football match.
