Tottenham to cash on Beckham’s popularity
David Beckham will become Tottenham’s highest-paid player with a £1.5 million deal for his three-month loan spell.
Beckham earns around £200,000 a-week at LA Galaxy but is willing to take a pay cut during the break in the MLS season.
At White Hart Lane, he will be on £120,000 a week – the top earner at the club.
But Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy views the move as a shrewd investment because of the income that Beckham will generate for Tottenham.
The club can exploit Beckham’s image rights and with shirt sales and other commercial ventures estimate they will earn in excess of £1m.
Beckham will cost Tottenham £500,000 – and that is seen as an economic coup by Levy.
Spurs will also have the 35-year-old former England captain as an ambassador for their bid to secure use of the site of the Olympic Stadium in Stratford when the Games finish next year.
Beckham was an influential part of the team that six years ago successfully convinced the IOC to stage the Olympics in London.
Now Spurs want him to front their attempt to use the site for a 60,000 stadium with lavish corporate facilities as they bid to relocate from White Hart Lane.
Beckham’s popularity and stature will be of immense value to Tottenham as they vie with West Ham for the use of the stadium. A decision will be made in March about who will be given the go-ahead.
