Second sponsor drops Rooney from ad campaign
Tiger Beer has followed Coca-Cola by dropping Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney from its advertising campaign following his alleged marital indiscretions.
Tiger’s television advert, entitled ‘The Game Never Ends’, was launched in April and showed Rooney – who is believed to earn around £300,000-a-year from the endorsement – winning the last bottle of the beer in a bar with some sublime ball skills. It has now been withdrawn by the company.
A source close to the brand told Campaign magazine that the advertising campaign has been “put on pause” until tabloid coverage around Rooney dies down.
Earlier this month it was revealed Coke had dropped Rooney from its Coke Zero advertising campaign after high-level executives in the US branded him “disgusting” following allegations that he had slept with prostitutes while his wife, Coleen, was pregnant.
Tiger’s Rooney advert was specifically crafted for markets in South-East Asia to promote Tiger’s broadcast sponsorship of the Premier League, as well as its other football initiatives. It has been replaced by an older advert produced by Saatchi and Saatchi, called ‘The Last Tiger’.
